Ingredients

Spiced Apple Filling
  • 6 medium (approx 2 lbs) apples (mix of Honeycrisp & Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch wedges
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (to thicken natural apple juices)
Buttery Brown Sugar Oat Streusel & Toppings
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed into small pieces
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for serving

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch or 9-inch round baking dish or cast iron skillet with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, fresh lemon juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch until thoroughly coated. Transfer apples into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and chopped pecans.
  4. Add cold cubed butter to the oat mixture. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingertips to work the butter into the dry ingredients until coarse, pea-sized crumbs form.
  5. Scatter the buttery oat streusel evenly over the spiced apples, covering them completely to the edges.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 38 to 42 minutes until the apple juices are bubbling vigorously around the edges and the oat topping is deep golden brown and crisp. Let cool for 10 minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream and warm salted caramel sauce.
